How staff housing works
Some hotels, resorts and villas house their staff, most often in remote places and for people who move from another island or country. It is arranged in different ways:
- free housing as part of the job
- housing with a weekly or monthly charge taken from your pay
- a housing allowance, and you find your own place
- shared rooms, sometimes with two or more people
- housing on the property or nearby, with or without transport
What we ask of employers
Promises of free housing are a favourite of fake recruiters. So on this site, only employers we have verified can offer staff housing, and each of those jobs sets out the housing terms in writing: where it is, whether it is shared, and what it costs you.
What the law says
Some countries limit what an employer can take for housing. In Saint Lucia, any part of your pay given "in kind" rather than in cash must be agreed, fairly valued, and worth no more than one third of your regular wage (Labour Act, section 56). In the Cayman Islands, the type and location of your housing is part of the work permit decision. Our service charge, tips and housing guide covers more.
Before you accept
- Is the housing free, or is money taken from my pay? How much?
- How many people share a room? Is there Wi-Fi, laundry and a kitchen?
- How far is it from work, and is transport provided?
- Are meals included on days off?
- What happens to my housing if the job ends?
Never pay a fee to get a job or to secure a room. If an offer of housing, flights and high pay comes out of the blue, read how to spot fake job offers first.
