When the season runs
On most islands the busy season runs from mid-December to April, when North American and European winters send visitors south. Many hotels recruit in September, October and November so new staff are trained before it starts, and large all-inclusive resorts hire all year. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, and some smaller hotels cut hours or close for a few weeks in that time. Set up a job alert to hear about seasonal jobs the day they are posted.
What a seasonal contract should say
A seasonal job is a fixed-term contract for the busy months. Before you accept, ask for these in writing:
- The start and end dates, and what happens if the season ends early or runs late.
- Your hours and days off.
- The base pay, and how service charge or tips are shared.
- Whether housing, meals and transport are provided, and what they cost.
- Who pays for your flights, work permit and medical checks.
Coming from another island or country
If you need a work permit, apply early. In most places the employer applies, and the permit must be approved before you start work, which takes time. CARICOM nationals with a CARICOM skills certificate can work without a work permit in the CSME countries that accept it. See our guides to work permits and CARICOM free movement.
Seasonal jobs at remote resorts often come with staff housing. Never pay a fee to get a job.
